About The Event
The tradition of Karneval (Mardi Gras) in Germany dictates the season to begin on 11:11 (Time) on 11/11 (Date).
Since 1890 the Rheinischer Verein of Chicago has honored this tradition by opening the season on the weekend closest to this date. The number 11 has a magical meaning to the Germans of the Rheinland, which makes this time of year significant. Karneval Season ends at 11:59 PM on “Fat Tuesday”, as Lent begins at Midnight.
It is customary for the Rheinischer Verein to elect a Prinz to reign over the festivities of the Karneval season. When a new Prinzinpaar is crowned, it happens at the Opening of the season. Our current National German American Mardi Gras Association (G.A.M.G.A.) Prinz and Prinzessin, and their Prinzinpaar (Court), will rule over the festivities of the evening.
After almost two years of not being able to celebrate together, this Opening will officially proclaim our return to the celebration of Mardi Gras, which is the foundation of our organization.
Be part of the fun, everyone is invited to join us in all of these activities, Music by Paloma, and performances by Fanfaren Corps.
